EALING Swimming Club finished runner-up to Hatfield in the second round of the Arena League at Watford last Saturday.

The team recorded faster times in 38 of the events than in the previous gala, notching up 21 first, 11 second and five third places - or 37 top-three results in 50 events.

That was despite the loss of several team members who were either away with the British team or unwell.

There were particularly good swims from the older swimmers, who won all the open events bar one.

Ekaterina Avramova set a new Bulgarian national record in the 100m backstroke, which she won in a time of 1.00.08. That was a new club record, as was Gina Heyn's winning 100m breaststroke time of 1hr 8mins 40secs.

Other open age swimmers who won their 100m events were Lauren Turner and Connor Barrett (both in 4x50m medley), Jenna Turner (butterfly and freestyle), Joao Matias (butterfly), Chris Jones (breaststroke) and Jamie Smithers (freestyle).

The women's 4x50m medley relay team of Avramova, Ella Kirby, Polly Kemp-King and Jenna Turner came first as did the women's 6x50m freestyle relay team of Heyn, Jenna Turner, Kemp-King, Lauren Turner, Kirby and Avramova.

These results were repeated by the men's medley team of Smithers, Tariq Miller, Matias and Kyle Barrett and the 6x50m freestyle team of Miller, both Barretts, Smithers, Matias and Melako Coker.

The youngest age group (U10s) was also successful with Maisie Jameson winning the 50m backstroke and freestyle, Lucy Thornton the butterfly and Omar Haroun the breaststroke.

The girls' medley team of Jameson and Thornton, with Tasmin Norris and Emma-Kate Sweeney, also won their relay and came second in the freestyle, where Ellie Love replaced Norris.
