STONEBRIDGE boxer Audley Harrison has announced his retirement from the sport.

The former Olympic gold medalist revealed his decision to hang up his gloves on his official website this morning.

It follows a knockout defeat to American fighter Deontay Wilder in Sheffield at the weekend.

"I've done well to turn my life around, but sadly my dream to be a legitimate world champion will be unrealised," he said.

“I believed if I was mentally and physically right, I could figure these young guns out. Saturday was my final chance to prove it. The thing that pulled me up was pride, so I wanted a chance to continue and go out on my shield. It was not to be.”

Harrison ends his career with seven defeats in 38 fights since winning gold as an amateur in Sydney 13 years ago.

He became the first British fighter to clinch an Olympic title in the super-heavyweight division but failed to reach the same heights as a professional.
