CHELSEA & Westminster Aquatics are as near as a toucher to mixing it with the mighty of swimming - and coach Ian Brown is already planning an assault on the best league in the UK.

A top three place in Saturday's Division Two play-off in the National Arena League guarantees the new club a seat at London's top table next season - and C&W have already placed first or second in the opening two rounds.

That would mean them competing in Division One - widely acknowledged as the strongest in the country - against national champions Ipswich and other giants like Ealing, Camden Swiss and Barnet Copthall.

"To not make it into the top three would need a massive no-show from our swimmers," said Brown. "Either that, or a mass of disqualifications - and I can't see that happening."

The club finally got its Amateur Swimming Association ratification this week, after the former Chelsea & Kensington SC and Westminster Swimmers joined forces three months ago to form a west London super-club.

And to prove the new set-up has strength in depth, 163 swimmers - about 65 more than normal - appeared for the first C&W club championships last week.

Brown needed to make sure all computers worked perfectly at Kensington Leisure Centre as the meeting took nearly four hours.

Those who needed mates or mums to carry the silverware at the end of the night included Charlotte Hogarth, who won all five races in the girls 10-11 category, Dana Jabre in the girls nine and under, Daniel Leznin, who likewise swept all before him in the boys nine and under age group.

New club records were also set by Isabella Hindley in the girls 12-13 100m individual medley and Pietro Revelli in the boys 10-11 50m freestyle - a race he won by nearly 3.5 seconds against class opponents.
