THE son of former Wasps and England fly-half Huw Davies scored a spectacular try as Old Merchant Taylors' took a massive step towards promotion on Saturday.
Tom Davies notched the final try with an effort his old man would have been proud of as the Northwood side downed promotion rivals and neighbours Uxbridge 44-14.
According to OMT's Gordon Brown, the youngster is every bit as good as his dad, who played 30 games for England in the 1980s, and was still going strong for Wasps in the 1990s.
Brown added: “Tom could be one hell of a player if he applied himself a bit more, but sometimes he wanders up a few minutes before the end of a game.
“I think he only made it on Saturday as his dad was at the pre-match lunch. But if it means we can keep him, I'm not complaining!
“Tom scored one of those tries on Saturday you see the Barbarians score, which is ironic as his dad played for the BaBas, and which you wish you had recorded.
“He picked up the ball well inside our own 22 and waltzed around about seven defenders before scoring. Harry Bellman scored a lovely try too when he chipped ahead and beat the full back to the ball.”
With two promotion places expected to be up for grabs, the win puts OMT in the driving seat and means Uxbridge have to make up the ground to deny them. OMTs remain top, but Harrow have games in hand.
Brown added: “It's a bit too early to say promotion is in the bag, but the onus is on Uxbridge now, although we will be cheering them on against Harrow next week.
“Harrow will still be favourites for the title, but they still have to play Uxbridge next week and us on March 24, and hopefully they will still have an eye on their cup run.
“Fair play to Uxbridge, they hit us hard in the first half and we went in 14-12 down at the break, but we were too much for them in the second half and put 32 unanswered points on them.”
Mickey Weymouth scored a try and two conversions, while Luke Matthews grabbed the other try, for Uxbridge, whose boss, Gareth Nicholls, admitted promotion is out of their hands now.
He said: “We didn't exactly see eye to eye with the ref. We were down to 13 men at one point, and you cannot win games like that. But all credit to OMTs, they didn't give us much ball in the second half anyway. We'll have to win all our games and rely on others to get promoted now.”
Elsewhere, in the same division, Hayes-based Old Abbotstonians went down 27-0 at Pinner & Grammarians, while in London One North, Ruislip's recent good form ended with a 52-5 hammering at Bury St Edmonds.
