DANIELA Sposi admits she is unlikely to ever grace an Olympic Games after narrowly missing out on a place in the Team GB handball squad last week.

The 32 year-old Ruislip Eagles star has enjoyed a league and cup double-winning season with her club and looked set to make the cut for London 2012.

But the Italian-born playmaker was left out of Jesper Holmris’ 14-strong squad for the games and cannot see herself representing her adopted nation in Brazil in 2016.

“After five long years of hard work it is disappointing not to be one of them,” said Sposi. “Our national team had 22 players aiming for the 14 spots available and it was always going to be difficult for the selectors.

“It has been an amazing journey and I have committed myself 100% so I don’t have any regrets and I can be proud of what I have achieved.

“I’m 32 now so I think my Olympic dream as a player is over. However, I’ve learnt a lot from the past 21 years of handball, but mostly in the past five with the GB coaches. I think I need to think about a coaching career now and help to develop more handball in this country.”

Once she has finished cheering on her GB team-mates this summer, Sposi intends to return her focus to matters at club level.

“Ruislip Eagles has been my club for the past seven years and with them I won five national titles as English Cups,” she added. “I think we have great potential and all the players are really committed to the team and hopefully next season we can retain our titles.”
