TONY Choules has compared Uxbridge’s current crop of young players to ‘Fergie’s Fledglings’ at Manchester United.

The likes of Callum Madigan, Keon Mendoza, William Wambeek, Josh Christopher and Conor Moody have all made an impression at Honeycroft this season.

Choules has been delighted with the progress of his young guns and draws comparisons with the Red Devils stars brought through by Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1990s. That United team included David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary and Phil Neville and Paul Scholes, who have all won major honours at club and international level.

Former Liverpool defender and BBC pundit Alan Hansen famously warned Ferguson, “You’ll never win anything with kids” before they completed a league and cup double.

And Uxbridge boss Choules (pictured) believes his own brood can challenge for the title next season, just like their Old Trafford counterparts all those years ago.

“I liken them to the bunch that Man United brought through under Ferguson,” Choules said of his young side, who beat Aylesbury 2-1 last week.

“All of them can go a long way in this game if they just keep doing what they’re doing. They’re listening, they’re learning, and we have more coming. Mitchell Wiseman will be making his debut in the next few days and he’s been getting rave reviews from the youth team and the reserves. He’s another one who will be in the spotlight.

“All these youngsters have been playing on Mondays with the youth team as well. Next season, you can rest assured that the only football they’ll be playing will be first-team football. The future looks safe and sound and there’s a lot of frustrated seniors boys here who just can’t get in at the moment.

“It was one of the youngest sides we’ve put out for a long time against Aylesbury and it was nice to sit back and see the young boys play with confidence and no fear factor. These boys are adapting to the environment very well at the moment.”

Choules’ babes host Ashford tomorrow night (Thursday) as they begin another busy week of Evo-Stik Division One Central action.

“We’ve got Ashford this Thursday and again you’ll see a young side step out,” Choules added. “We go Daventry on Saturday, if their pitch improves, and then we’ve got the local derby with AFC Hayes for the bragging rights next Tuesday.

“It’s a massive week for us and these are big games as we look to finish as high as we can. We want the local bragging rights.”

Uxbridge have six first-team players sidelined through injury as the season enters its climax, with Kevin Warner and Andy Capewell the latest squad members to hit the treatment table following the Aylesbury win.

? Northwood’s trip to Royston Town was postponed on Saturday. They were due to entertain Thatcham Town last night (Tuesday).
