Kenton Road Club members Brendan Heaslip and Des and Dave Gayler had a frustrating time in last Sunday's LVRC Reading Cycling Club-promoted road race over five miles in the Nettlebed area.

Just as the main attacks of the day were taking place after 42 miles of racing, Des bounced over a sharp stone and punctured. His brother Dave stopped to offer up his wheel but Des decided Dave was best placed to continue and waved him on. After a rapid chase, Dave had just rejoined the main field when another series of attacks saw the bunch accelerate, leaving him with no chance of recovery and he abandoned. Heaslip, who was riding solidly in the peleton and thriving on the hills, also punctured with 12 miles to the finish.

Harrow's Team Quest, however, were on a 'podium day' with Bob Garlinge taking the win, Colin Roshier third overall and first B Category rider, and Paul Doel fifth overall and third B Category rider.

* The funeral of Gwyn Doel, the mother of local Team Quest brothers Mark and Paul, took place at Breakspeare Crematorium on Thursday, September 25. More than 100 family and cycling friends attended the moving service, including club members from Team Quest, Kenton RC, Willesden CC, Hillingdon CC, Hillingdon Slipstreamers, Hounslow & District CC, Marlborough C& AC and Chequers RC.
