Wealdstone 5 Metropolitan Police 2
Greg Ngoyi enhanced his chances of earning a first league start for Wealdstone with a fine brace on Tuesday night.
The Stones eased through to the third round of the Isthmian League Cup thanks to the assured finishes of the former Edgware hot-shot, plus further goals from Danny Spendlove, Ben Alexander and Jacque Floweday.
"He's definitely done his chances no harm at all," said boss Gordon Bartlett on whether Ngoyi would spearhead the attack at Tonbridge on Saturday.
"We made seven or eight changes and produced a fantastic performance against a strong Met Police side."
Stones were lucky not to go behind as early as the sixth minute, but goal-keeper Luke Woods was relieved to see a shot hit the top of his crossbar.
The former Malta U21 international then produced fine saves to deny Rob Carley and Michael Cobden as the visitors got to grips with the freezing weather conditions.
It was against the run of play that Stones broke the deadlock. Ben Clarke whipped in a cross from the right with pace and Ngoyi blasted home at the far post.
It got even better for the hosts two minutes later when Spendlove, a new recruit from Cambridge City, lofted the ball into an empty net from distance after Met goalkeeper Mo Maan had made a hash of what should have been a straightforward catch.
Ngoyi made it 3-0 a few minutes before the break and, understandably, Stones eased their foot off the pedal in the second period.
Graeme Montgomery had a shot palmed away before Craig Carley netted from the penalty spot for the boys in blue after 70 minutes.
Ben Alexander then did his confidence the world of good with a neat finish after being set up by Carl Martin, before substitute Floweday put the gloss on a fine team display with the fifth goal in the 84th minute.
The visitors pulled one back late on but it was no more than a consolation after the damage had been done in the first half.
The draw for the third round will be made tomorrow (Friday).
