CHIEF executive Gus MacKay admits changing Harlequins Rugby League's name will not guarantee success – or a new Super League license.

Quins announced on Friday that they are considering the club's fourth name change in it's 31 year history ahead of next season.

Since being formed in 1980 as Fulham RFC, the club has also been known as London Crusaders, London Broncos and now Harlequins.

And while MacKay insists the link-up with the Quins union side four years ago has not failed, he believes the club needs its own identity.

He said: “Changing our name won't guarantee us a full house, or us getting a new licence, but we need to be able to market our own identity to allow us to grow.

“The London branding is quite important and we need the city's name in there if we can - all the big northern teams have their city's name in their title.

“There's always a strong draw to the Broncos name as those were our most successful years, but I'd be surprised if we go back to it.

“However, we will be consulting with fans as part of the process, and they may decide that's what they like. They may even decide they want to stay as we are, but again I'd be surprised.

I don't want to go into whether or not the Harlequins experiment has been a success or failure, but we are looking into a review of the club as a whole, and the branding we play under.”

The announcement somewhat overshadowed Quins' 40-22 win over Wakefield Wildcats the following day, which brought to an end the club's 13-game winless run in Super League.

Tries from Luke Gale, Chris Bailey, Luke Dorn, Tony Clubb, Chris Melling, Chad Randall and Jamie O'Callaghan, with six converted by Gale, brought the nightmare run to and end.

And for MacKay, the result justified the faith his board has shown in rookie head coach Rob Powell, who took over from Brian McDermott this season.

He added: “We always knew Rob would turn things around as he is doing the best job he can with what he has available, and the team has been showing glimpses of our early season form which saw us top the table.

“What people don't realise is Rob has the smallest squad in the whole Super League, so when the injuries kick in like they have we struggle.”

Making his debut against Wakefield was Kyle Briggs, the Bradford Bulls half-back who has signed on a month's loan. Quins host Hull Kingston Rovers tomorrow.
