ANDY SCOTT has thrown down the gauntlet to Brentford striker Ross Montague to show him he’s worth a new contract during pre-season.

Montague’s deal is up on June 30, but his name was left off both the released list and those offered new terms.

Instead, Scott wants to see how the youngster bounces back from a cruciate injury which has kept him out for most of the season.

Montague burst onto the scene two years ago, replacing Lee Thorpe as Alan Connell’s regular partner and scoring one goal in 14 games before Nathan Elder was brought in.

Scott said: "We have given Ross the medical care we are obliged to and have not released him as I want to look at him in pre-season.

"It’s a long injury to come back from, but he is progressing well, and if he shows the sort of form which got him into the first team in the first place, he could earn himself a new contract."

The Isleworth-born 20-year-old has had three impressive loan spells too, scoring nine goals in total in 18 games for Sutton, Welling and Basingstoke.
