HARROW AC star Dean Macey has announced his retirement after failing to qualify for the Olympics in Beijing.

The decathlete's failure to gain the required standard follows two agonising fourth place finishes in the last two games in Athens and Sydney.

The 30-year-old from Canvey, Essex, does however retire as Commonwealth champion following his win at the 2006 games in Melbourne.

Injury has dogged the star since he came to prominence 10 years ago in a career that included a silver medal in the 1999 World Championships in Seville and a bronze in the same competition two years later in Edmonton, Canada.
