JOHN Smith was always going to be the winner when two bowlers of the same name met in the Middlesex Unbadged Competition this week.
Fortunately for Gunnersbury Park Bowls Club, it was their John Smith who recovered from the brink of defeat to triumph over his namesake from Staines 21-17 and march into the last eight.
It was the culmination of a good week for Gunnersbury, whose renaissance continues with the passing of the summer solstice.
Smith was joined by Steve Powell and Jim Headd as the Monday Night Triples team were victors over Concorde 24-15, while in the Fordbridge League, there was an 82-49 win over Osterley.
A 44-22 victory over Acton Park followed in the Ad-Finem League, while Gunnersbury were awarded their tie against Rosedale in the Bunny Haynes Competition after their opponents dropped out.
