AN INSPIRED performance with bat and ball from Mubin Iqbal wasn't enough to lead Southall to victory over Calthorpe on Saturday.

Iqbal took 5-53, held three catches and hit a quick-fire 24 in the run chase, but his team ended up hanging on for a draw in a tense finish.

Hosts Calthorpe batted strongly after a delayed start, and it was only the introduction of Iqbal and fellow spinner Iqbal Dhutti (2-54) which pegged back the opposition to 221-9.

Southall's victory bid got off to an excellent start as Imran Aziz (41) and Khuram Shezad played positively.

However, a mid-innings collapse, which saw three wickets fall for no runs, meant the visitors were struggling on 120-6.

Despite Iqbal's entertaining cameo, the last pair had to play out the last few balls for a draw.

Next week will see Southall challenge rivals MTSSC at Adriene Avenue, Southall.
