England 2-1 India

There was a Hoare of delight in the Kyocera Stadium as England beat India - and west London pal Dan Shingles was just as pleased.

Michael Hoare and Shingles played their part to keep the country’s World Cup hopes alive in The Hague with a vital win at the death after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Spain in the opening match.

Former Uxbridge student Shingles admitted it was close.

He said: “It was a slightly disappointing draw to start, but great to play in my first World Cup game. We left it late against India, but it was a great win in the end.”

Goal: Simon Mantell (left)

Simon Mantell struck the all-important penalty corner in the 69th minute after Mark Gleghorne’s 27th PC had been cancelled out by Dharamvir Singh just three minutes later.

Hoare, recently arrived in Chiswick, and Shingles are back to the coalface again when they face Malaysia, reeling from a 6-2 defeat by Belgium, in a high noon pushback on Thursday in their third Group A match.
