As a warm-up for the Commonwealth Games - it went rather well for Dan Fox and Michael Hoare at the weekend.

England won the Investec London Cup at the new Lee Valley Centre in Olympic Park after a thrilling penalty shoot-out against Ireland.

The weekend-long tournament that also featured Games hosts Scotland and South Africa, came to a head when ex-Hampstead & Westminster captain Fox and Hoare from Chiswick saw the game finish 2-2 in normal time.

Twice England led through Alastair Brogdon and David Condon. Twice the Irish hit back including a last-minute equaliser from Michael Darling.

Defence: England keeper George Pinner and Dan Fox

When it came to sudden death however, Brogdon hit the all-important fourth out of four penalties to lift the trophy 4-2 after keeper George Pinner had blocked two Irish efforts.

It reversed a group-stage 4-1 defeat to the men in green after England had thumped Scotland 6-0 and South Africa 7-0.

The Commonwealth Games hockey starts on July 24 at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre in the city’s East End, and despite this victory, Fox, Hoare and co have their work cut out to reverse dominance from Down Under.

Australia has lifted every Games title since its introduction in 1998. England also have to get past previous medal winners India, New Zealand and Malaysia.
