BRAD Hewitt is the new Northwood captain.

The 24-year-old will replace outgoing skipper Reece Yorke (pictured) following his recent departure to Burnham.

Hewitt had been captaining the Woods in their pre-season program and was confirmed as skipper after their friendly with Hendon at the weekend.

The centre-back started his career at Norwich’s academy before having stints at Arsenal, Watford, Barnet and eventually Boreham Wood.

He first signed for Northwood in 2006, clocking up nearly 200 appearances in all competitions, before moving on.

After spells at Hemel Hempstead in 2010 and Biggleswade, he decided to return to the Woods in 2012.

And manager Mark Burgess now feels that this is the right time to make the tough-tackling defender his captain.

Burgess said: “He [Hewitt] has been here the longest and will be a regular this season.

“He will organise the team well and will tell people what needs to be done. He’s a leader and that’s what you need from a captain.”

Meanwhile, Burgess praised the impact that his new signings had on their game with Hendon, and hinted at two new signings.

“The new players are doing really well. Sonny Bailey-Aird from Wealdstone is a bright and hard working young lad.

“It’s coming together and it’s getting there.

“There’s nothing more as yet regarding new signings, but I’m definitely looking to bring two more in before the start of the season.”

Burgess’s boys played out a goalless draw with Hendon at Northwood Park on Saturday.

Reshaun Raphael came closest to scoring for the hosts in a tightly contested game, but the frontman saw his goal denied by the linesman’s flag.

And manager Burgess felt that the game helped his side’s preparations for the start of their league campaign.

He added: “I thought it went quite well fitness-wise from our point of view.

“Hendon are obviously a good side and moved the ball well, but I thought we matched them in some areas which was good to see.”

Northwood were last night (Tuesday) due to travel to Bushey Sports Club before bringing down the curtain on their pre-season campaign against Maidenhead this weekend.

Elsewhere, AFC Hayes made it four wins out of five with a 3-1 victory at home to Thatcham Town on Saturday.

Ian Crane’s Brook are due to host Ryman Premier side Wealdstone at Farm Park tonight (Wednesday).
