HAYES and Yeading were dumped out of the FA Cup at the first time of asking today by a rampant Cambridge United.

It was always going to be a tough ask for lowly Hayes and Yeading against a Cambridge side currently fifth in the Blue Square Premier and so it proved as the favourites bagged the £12,500 prize in emphatic style.

Doubles from Ashley Carew and Luke Berry, along with strikes from Jordan Patrick and Ryan Charles helped Cambridge come from behind after a Ryan Crockford free-kick had given the hosts the lead in this fourth qualifying round tie.

Home boss Nas Bashir was down to the bare bones of his squad with youth teamers Aristede Bassele and Aaron Harriott making the bench, along with former Watford trainee Mohamed Bettamer.

Tom Collins replaced the suspended Mark Bentley, veteran Delroy Preddie (pictured) coming in between the sticks for the ineligible Steve Arnold and Sam Argent making a start with Fraser Franks having gone back to AFC Wimbledon.

But the absence of regular left-back Dan Spence was perhaps most felt by Hayes and Yeading as Diak John was given a torrid time by right-winger Carew.

The visitors had a golden chance to open the scoring in the 14 th minute when a slip by John put Carew through, but he shot into the side-netting when it looked easier to score.

Hayes and Yeading had their first shot on target a minute later when Luke Williams found Louie Soares in space in the area, but his curler was beaten out by Cambridge goalkeeper Michael Naisbitt.

The hosts opened the scoring in superb style in the 29 th minute when Ryan Crockford curled home a brilliant 25-yard free-kick that was almost almost a mirror image of the goal he scored on the opening day against Alfreton Town.

However, the lead lasted less than two minutes as the visitors equalised through Berry, who had a simple tap-in after Carew had broke free again and crossed from the right.

The hosts should have been in front again though 10 minutes before the break when Soares delivered a teasing cross that picked out Curtis Ujah just six yards out, but he failed to get his head to it when any touch would have meant a goal.

Cambridge snatched the lead against the run of play a minute before the break though when John allowed a long ball to go over his head after a clash with Berry and Carew made no mistake from close range.

The visitors had one foot in the first round of the FA Cup just 24 seconds after the break in what was almost an exact replica of the goal that made it 2-1 with Carew crossing again for Berry to stab home.

There was a great chance for Hayes and Yeading to get back into it when a Crockford corner found Pacquette completely unmarked, but he headed wide from close range.

However, Cambridge twice came within inches of a fourth when Berry headed against the crossbar and Carew followed up from the rebound with a shot that was cleared off the line by Tom Cadmore.

They did get a fourth 10 minutes from time through that man Carew when he turned inside John and fired home from just outside the area and Cambridge substitutes Jordan Patrick and Ryan Charles made it six for the visitors with a Louie Soares penalty sandwiched in between those two goals.

Hayes and Yeading: Preddie, Argent (Elliott Legg), John, Cadmore, Soares, Crockford (Wishart), Williams, Pacquette (Joseph-Dubois), Mackie, Ujah, Collins.
