Chalfont St Peter 5

AFC Hayes 1

LACKLUSTRE AFC Hayes were swept aside by a rampant Chalfont St Peter on Saturday, writes Ryan O’Donovan.

Tony Mendy scored their only goal in the 21st minute in what was an otherwise forgettable game for the Hayes side.

The Brook had the first chance of the encounter, with Lawrie Shennan putting in a low cross that no one could connect with.

But it was Chalfont St Peter who struck first when a goal kick launched right through the heart of the pitch caught the Hayes defence off guard, allowing Daryl Atkins to poke the ball past Aloi Haxiara.

Hayes tried to respond in the 14th minute, but Mitch Gough saw his effort saved by the Chalfont stopper.

Saints responded, however, in the 17th minute when a sublime shot from 20 yards out found the top corner.

Mendy found the net minutes later for Hayes, but Chalfont made it three when Haxiara was chipped from the edge of the box.

Another gap in the centre of the defence saw Chalfont score their fourth, although there were suspicions of the striker being offside.

The Brook improved in the second-half until James Hammond found the top corner to complete the job for Danny Edwards’ Saints.
