THAMES VALLEY LEAGUE DIVISION 3A
Stoke Green 205-9
Hayes won by six wickets
HAYES closed the gap at the top of Division 3A with a much-needed victory at the home of league pacesetters Stoke Green.
Seam twins John Parker (4-47) and Dan Thurgood (2-26), alongside the opening batsmen of Pyara Sidhu (79) and Karempreet Singh (57), were leading lights in a six-wicket triumph.
Hayes skipper Michael Green managed to lose the toss and reported back to his opening bowlers to limber up.
Parker and Thurgood received the news well and bowled miserly yet penetrative spells at the Stoke top order restricting them to 25 for the loss of three wickets after 14 fine overs.
After this ideal start Hayes didn’t have everything their own way as their bowlers met some resistance.
To their credit the Stoke middle order had successive 50 partnerships for the fifth and sixth wickets to drag themselves to a competitive total of 205-9 from their maximum 52 overs.
In reply, and in contrast to the Stoke Green opening pair, the Hayes openers set off with some gusto.
Singh played the perfect anchoring role with 57 from 109 balls, allowing Sidhu to flourish and play some of his trademark strokes.
The strokemaker larruped an entertaining 79 from 82 balls dealing almost exclusively in boundaries with eight fours and clearing the rope on five occasions.
This fine partnership of 137 from 27 overs gave the Hayes middle order the perfect foundation to be able to knock off the rest of the runs with four overs to spare.
The much-needed win means Hayes close to within just eight points of the second promotion spot currently held by Slough and with performances like this one they will be confident of overcoming the deficit.
