SKIPPER Peter Holmes has backed 18-year-old Nathan Webb to put his red card shame behind him.
Right-back Webb's promising season has been marred by two sending offs this season, the latest of them in Saturday's FA Trophy knockout at the hands of Ebbsfleet United .
Webb (pictured) handled in the area to give away a penalty for his first yellow, before a rash challenge on Tom Phipp resulted in referee Simon Long giving him his marching orders.
But Holmes believes that Webb has the right attributes to be a good player at Blue Square Premier level.
“Nathan can put it behind him,” said Holmes. “He is a good player, who gets up and down the flank well.
“He was maybe in a bit late and I have got to be careful what I say, but I did not think the referee had a good game.
“That is my opinion and I think that there were a few other tackles that were pretty much the same.”
However, 30-year-old ex-Luton Town midfielder Holmes has urged Webb and his fellow Hayes & Yeading youngsters to stand up for themselves more on the football pitch.
Though Holmes is talking about the club's youngsters being more vocal in the club's fight to avoid relegation.
“It is a big part of the game,” added Holmes. “Nathan is a great little footballer and we have some good young players, but they need to step up and start saying what they think on the field. It does not matter how old you are, it's a man's game and everyone has to be more vocal out there because people do not realise how much it helps.”
