PHIL Babb was close to clinching the double capture of Jake Reid and former Crawley Town defender Charlie Wassmer last night (Tuesday).

The duo were expected to sign forms after playing in a pre-season friendly fixture with Wingate & Finchley.

Former Newport and Telford striker Reid (pictured) has been on Babb’s radar since his first week in the job in May, and scored a hat-trick on his debut against Slough Town.

Wassmer will be making a return to United following a two-year exodus when he was snapped up by Crawley Town as Steve Evans’ side marched into the Football League.

The 22-year-old defender has also had spells on loan at Fleetwood and Dagenham & Redbridge and spent the second half of last season at Cambridge United.

Wassmer played the full 90 minutes for United in Saturday’s 3-1 win at Wealdstone, but Reid was not available owing to other commitments.

United chairman Derek Goodall has decided to resign and will be replaced by the club’s director of football, Tony O’Driscoll.

Goodall was appointed chairman of the merged club in 2007 following many years of service at Hayes FC.

A statement issued by Hayes & Yeading read: “Derek is well known and well respected within the non-league scene and will no doubt be greatly missed by many both inside and outside of the club. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Derek after everything he has given to and achieved at both clubs, but with excitement and anticipation, we also welcome Tony to his new role.”

In a second statement, United confirmed an exclusive report by the Gazette earlier this month: “The club can confirm that first team home fixtures will initially be played at Woking’s Kingfield Stadium. This is due to the delays in getting The Sharda Glass Community Stadium ready for action.”
