Harrow 27

Hackney 21

LEAGUE-LEADERS Harrow laid down a marker to the chasing pack with a crucial victory over title challengers Hackney at the weekend.

Chris West’s side continued to show why they are 10 points clear at the summit of Herts/Middx 1 with a bonus-point win against their third-placed opponents.

Within 10 minutes Harrow had opened the scoring as West passed to Gary Conroy to set up Lee Huggett for a try near the posts.

Christian Witney missed the conversion but the home side had the early lead they craved, the kicker making up for his error shortly after by dispatching a penalty.

It looked like one-way traffic would follow but Hackney are not in the top third of the table for no reason and clawed it back to 8-7 at the break.

Harrow fans could have been forgiven for feeling twitchy with that half-time scoreline.

However, it was a classy performance in the second period from the leaders as two tries from William Keany, more solid kicking from Witney, and a Tom Cosgrove score put the game to bed despite a late rally from the visitors.

Three league matches remain for Harrow, with 15 points up for grabs, and only five needed for promotion.

Basement boys Hendon are next up on Saturday as the table-toppers look to confirm their place in the top two.
