HANWELL Town had a week to forget as they slipped to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Broxbourne Borough just a few days after a hugely disappointing 1-1 draw at relegation-threatened Haringey Borough.

That's three reverses at home in a row for Town, who are sixth in the Spartan South Midlands league, but ending the season on a low note.

Tuesday night's attempts to get back on track were hindered by a depleted line-up and no regular forward in the starting XI.

For all that, Town made a very bright start and took the lead in the 12th minute when David Diedhiou scored from close range.

They should have gone further ahead but Lee Clarke missed a golden opportunity, his shot from close in striking a Broxbourne defender on the goalline, with keeper Obey Murefu beaten. A minute later, Broxbourne equalised thanks to a fine individual goal from Sam Ruff, who beat several defenders in a mazy run before drilling the ball low into the bottom corner.

Town fell behind when Jason Tucker was adjudged to have pushed over Ryan Wade, who picked himself up to score from the resulting spot kick. Wade scored again deep into injury time at the end of the half to make it 3-1.

Town had much the better of the second half with Diedhiou twice finding the net, only for the goals to be disallowed, while Town keeper Nej Hussein was a virtual spectator at the other end. But it made no difference to the outcome.

Against Haringey Borough on Saturday, Hanwell were much the better of the two sides in the opening period, but second best after the break.

Had Haringey's much-travelled Lloyd Opara had his shooting boots on, there is little doubt that Town would have sunk to an ignominious defeat. Town took the lead after just six minutes when Luke Kenny took advantage of hesitation in the Haringey defence to play the ball back into the path of Charlie Baverstock, who fired past keeper Jamaine Edwards.

Town had the ball in the net again shortly after but it was disallowed, much to the surprise of both sides, then Edwards fumbled a Blaise O'Brien shot on to a post before the ball was scrambled to safety.

But that was as good as it got and, in a limp second half display, the home side finally found the net eight minutes from time after a string of misses by Opara - who lists both Colchester United and Peterborough United among his former clubs. A George Sifonius corner kick was met by Haringey captain Bosun Adebaki, who powered home a header at the far post.

Town travel to Biggleswade Town this weekend.
