Two Hillingdon wheelchair tennis players won doubles titles on Saturday at the Nottingham Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament.

Andy Lapthorne and Jordanne Whiley were both victorious at the event in the indoor quad doubles and the women’s doubles respectively.

Lapthorne, 24, played with Jamie Burdekin and the pair saved five match points in the final set as they beat Australia’s Dylan Alcott and fellow Brit Antony Cotterill 6-4 1-6 7-6.

It was US Open champion Lapthorne’s second match of the day having lost to British Open champion Alcott 6-2 6-1 in the singles.

Lapthorne said: “To come back from match points down and win the doubles is a great feeling and showed good character.

“If I lost that match this day would have been a downer, hopefully this gives me momentum for the Masters in my home city of London next week.”

Whiley, 22, partnered Lucy Shuker to a 6-4 7-5 victory over South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane and the USA’s Kaitlyn Verfuerth.

The pair won bronze at the 2012 Paralympics but it was the first time that the British number one had paired up with Shuker since being finalists at the British Open at the same venue in July.

The calendar year Grand Slam winner was beaten in the women’s singles by world number two Jiske Griffioen of the Netherlands 6-0 6-4 on Sunday.

Shuker said: “It was a good win and nice to win a title with Jordanne again.

“Our games really complement each other and I’m chuffed to end the season with that doubles victory.”

Elsewhere in the tournament, British number one Gordon Reid defended his men’s singles title.

However, Reid missed out on the doubles title as he and France’s Michael Jeremiasz were beaten 6-4 6-3 by Joachim Gerard of Belgium and Nicolas Peifer of France.
