TARA Camogie Club’s junior team edged out Mitchells in a game decided on points rather than goals.

Leading 2-4 to 1-5 at half-time in Saturday’s game in Birmingham, the Greenford girls had to survive a testing examination to hold on to the win – eventually taking it 2-10 to 2-7.

It looked like it might be a stroll early on. Inside the first seven minutes, Mary Fenton scored a goal and a point, with Orla Callaghan also adding to the tally.

Both later added a point each as Tara remained in control.

Emer Kelly played a blinder in the first half, clearing balls out of danger and into scoring territory.

Joni Traynor played well at full back, ensuring goalie Aileen Dillon did not have too much work to do.

Midfielder Kate Mooney sent in some fabulous balls into the forward line, one of which found Anna Nyhan, who managed to pull the ball past the Mitchells keeper.

But the match was far from over and the home side retaliated well, scoring three points and a goal before the break and then adding a second goal not long after the restart to reduce the gap to a single point.

Tara dug deep, determined not to allow Mitchells to steal the game from them, and the pressure eased a notch with precious points from backs Traynor and Sheila Fernandes.

Callaghan also added to the scores with two well-taken frees and Lisa Creamer managed to close off Mitchells’ threats to see out the game.
