Richard Franzese was the star as Harrow Athletic Club achieved its best ever placing in the prestigious South of England cross-country championships at Uxbridge on Saturday, writes Tony Bush.

The 22-year-old Oxford student glided over the heavy mud to finish a superb 19th from an elite field of more than 600.

Adam Bowden struggled in the porridge-like conditions to finish 32nd, just one place ahead of team-mate Ben Warren.

Damian Nevins, Jim Cooper and Alan Checkley gave good support as Harrow finished an impressive sixth in the team event.

Stephen Byrne ran very well for 23rd in the U15 race,leading Harrow to 14th team spot, while Oliver Hurcom's 128th place led Harrow to 24th in the U13 category.
