WEST Ealing Bowls Club will have a quartet in this year’s national finals – a fitting way to mark the club’s 90th anniversary.

The team of Chris Ryan, Stan Medhurst, Paul Cater and Nick Skidmore (pictured) progressed through the quarter and semi-finals of the Middlesex Fours, at Bush Hill Park, north London, which guarantees them a place at the national championships in Worthing next month.

They easily overcame Cockfosters in the quarter-final (28-8) before facing Bishopswood in the semis, who had earlier defeated West Ealing’s other quarter finalists – Ken McCarthy, Rob Ryan, Ken Hodgson and Robin Innes.

Bishopswood got the better start, racing to an 8-2 lead, but the West Ealing rink hit back with 25 unanswered shots, and it finished 27-8.

The rink proved a perfect blend of youth and experience. Cater and Skidmore have reached many county finals, but for Chris Ryan, at 19 West Ealing’s youngest member, it will be his first taste at this level.

In the county final, they play Bush Hill Park and in the nationals they face a side representing Warwickshire.
