CHARLIE Ide has been handed a lifeline by Hayes & Yeading to get his career back on track.

The former Bees winger beat the March transfer deadline by signing for the Blue Square Premier club on non-contract forms, with United boss Garry Haylock insisting he can harness Ide’s wayward talents.

The player had one great season at Griffin Park in 2006-07 – but has since drifted in and out of the non-league game with short-lived spells at Carshalton Athletic, Chertsey Town, from where he was sacked after just one game in November, and Bedfont Green.

However, Haylock reckons the 21-year-old is far better than a league four divisions below his own club’s.

"Charlie’s got a good pedigree – and I’ve got a good track record of reviving players who've lost their way and getting the best out of them," he said.

"It’s a two-way thing. If Charlie does all right for us, then there’s no reason why he couldn’t attract a good deal in the summer – either here or somewhere else.

"But he’s at Hayes & Yeading on a non-contract basis so if he messes around – he’s straight out the door."

Ide immediately goes into Haylock’s squad for the away match at Luton tomorrow, and is set to play one of the front-two roles alongside either Scott Fitzgerald or Daniel Wishart.
