FELTHAM tennis starlet Enrique Vidal has been crowned U16s boys champion at the Aegon British Junior National Championships.

The 16 year old triumphed after brilliantly winning Sunday's final 7-6, 6-1 against Daniel Little at the Nottingham Tennis Centre.

The tournament is a showcase for the best British junior talent, and Vidal joins the likes of Andy Murray and Elena Baltacha in lifting the trophy.

This year's event saw many of the top seeds fall to lower ranked players, but fourth seed Vidal avoided that particular pitfall when he saw off unseeded Little in the final.

Having played the big points better in the first set to come through the tie-break, he clicked into another gear and ran out a comfortably winner.

Vidal said: “I am very happy because all the hard work has paid off for me now. I just tried to take it point by point and avoided thinking about what was going on in the rest of the draw, so I was very calm in the final.

“It is a big boost to my confidence to have won the trophy, and I will go into the winter feeling really good about my tennis. I have told my parents and they are really pleased for me, so I can’t wait to get home now to show them the trophy.”

Vidal, who went into the tournament ranked number one in both his age group and the one above, reached the final with another comfortable win, beating Thomas Wright 6-3, 6-1.

Tournament director Richard Joyner added: “Enrique played outstanding tennis all week and showed the talent and the mentality to beat some of the very best British junior players.

“Hopefully he will take the confidence he will have gained away from here and continue his development as a tennis player.”

Vidal currently plays at both David Lloyd Heston and Dukes Meadows in Chiswick, and can also be found knocking balls around at the National Tennis Centre with the likes of Laura Robson and Heather Watson.

He is currently being coached by Hounslow's Glenn Kumah-Mintah, who himself used to train with Andy Murray as a youngster, but is on the lookout for sponsorship to help him in his aim to become number one both nationally and internationally. Anyone who can help should call 07787 117440.
