SAM Cox could yet make a sensational return to Hayes & Yeading United.

The former Tottenham Hotspur youngster captained the side last season and was named Player of the Year by the club’s fans.

Cox made 44 appearances in the middle of the park and chipped in with three goals as United secured Conference South safety after a difficult season.

But the ex-Spurs starlet’s contract expired this summer and he looked to move on as Sheffield United, Portsmouth and Chesterfield all expressed an interest.

Crawley Town have also spoken with the 22-year-old and are believed to be keeping tabs on how the situation develops.

Cox was also unable to negotiate a deal with Morton in Scotland earlier this summer, leaving the midfielder to return south ahead of the start of the campaign.

He remains a free agent and the Gazette understands tentative contact has been made between United and last year’s skipper over a possible reunion.

Conference South rivals Boreham Wood and Ebbsfleet are also in the running for the cultured midfielder’s signature, with the new season kicking off this weekend.
