UWE Rosler believes new defensive coach Alan Kernaghan is already having a positive effect on his Brentford back four.

The former Middlesbrough and Manchester City centre-back was officially appointed last week, but has been working closely with the club on and off for the past few months.

And suddenly, a Brentford side who were leaking goals only a couple of weeks ago have kept two successive clean sheets and look a far more solid unit.

Rosler said: “I was a little bit concerned a few weeks ago when we couldn't keep a clean sheet. Alan has come in to work on our defending and will put extra focus on that.

“Alan will have a big input. He's been with us before, a few months ago for three or four days, and has done some scouting for us in Scotland. I am quite sure of his qualities."

Kernaghan is initially at Griffin Park until the end of the season, but Rosler is confident his old team-mate, also a former Republic of Ireland international, will stay longer.

The Bees boss added: “We have known each other a long time and kept in touch since our days at Manchester City.

“Alan has good coaching experience. He has been a player-coach, manager and assistant manager, and he ticks all the boxes for me.

“He is here until the end of the season with a view to the new season too, and we will both see how it goes, but I am quite sure he will stay.

“However, we have to be sure of the numbers for next season before we start giving out too many contracts.”
