ADAM Green hailed last night's victory over Eastbourne Borough as crucial for Hayes & Yeading's survival hopes.

The ex-Fulham left-back (pictured) admits that Hayes & Yeading urgently need to start picking up points before a tough Christmas spell that includes clashes with title-chasers AFC Wimbledon and Crawley.

But victory over fellow strugglers Eastbourne has lifted morale among Garry Haylock's men after six successive defeats - and they are now only in the relegation zone due to an inferior goal difference.

"It was a crucial win for us," he said. "We have some tough games coming up over Christmas so we need to start picking points up. We don't want to be cut adrift at Christmas and going into the New Year struggling. A couple more wins will take us right up the table as there's not a big gap between the bottom and halfway.

"They were coming at us after the red card. When we went down to 10 men, it was important that we didn't sit back, we tried to push on and not let them pressure us too much and we held on. It was a must-win game for us tonight."
