ENTERTAIN on the pitch and the crowds will start to flock back – that is the view of London Broncos chief executive Gus Mackay.

The Broncos were relaunched with a fanfare back in November, reverting to their former name after six years as Harlequins Rugby League, with the aim of getting the whole capital to embrace its only rugby league team once more.

The glory days of a Challenge Cup final appearance and second place Super League finish in the club's first Broncos incarnation are a distant memory, and Mackay admits take-up has been slow since the switch back – but remains positive.

He said: “Season tickets sales are in line to match previous seasons, but we believe if we turn things around on the pitch, entertaining people and winning games, we will have more Londoners come to see us.

Nevertheless, the Broncos will be hoping for a healthy crowd when they kick off the new Super League season at home to St Helens tomorrow, kicking off at the Twickenham Stoop at 3pm.

They will go into the game on the back of a 42-12 win at London Skolars last Friday, in which former Feltham schoolboy Jamie O'Callaghan scored a hat-trick of tries, with others coming from Omari Caro, Luke Dorn, Chris Melling and Michael Witt, who also kicked seven conversions.
