AN EALING Schools U14 team returned unbeaten from the annual English Schools FA U14 festival on the Isle of Wight - winning three of their four matches.

But they also walked away with the only prize at stake in the event - the Bert Worrall Fair Play Award for good sportsmanship on the field and good behaviour off it.

It was the first time Ealing have won the award.

The festival has been staged for 26 years, with all but the first four taking place on the island.

A total of 17 representative sides took part, from Jersey in the south to Bishop Auckland in the north and from Cornwall in the west to Gravesham, Kent, in the east.

As well as playing four games in four days, the players also enjoyed training sessions from qualified coaches and football-based activities.

The intention of the festival was to give the teams taking part the opportunity to meet others they cannot play in a normal season, because of the distances involved.

Ealing's record at the festival was very impressive, with the defence conceding only once in four games.

There were wins against Derby (4-0, with goals from Zach Smart, Ryan Dilworth (2) and Kyle Alphonse), Coventry (2-0, with Dilworth bagging both) and Yeovil (2-0, with Wojgek Opalinski netting twice).

They also drew 1-1 with Plymouth, Smart scoring for Ealing.

The Ealing players who took part were: Louis Akioya, Kyle Alphonse, Ryan Dilworth, John Hadfield, Jordan Hannington, Joe Moloney, Nortei Nortey, Wojgek Opalinski, Milo Racadio, Martin Rowland, Samuel

Russel, Zach Smart, Taffarai Speede,

Stefan Tomasevic and Paul Walsh.

The team was managed by Sean Dowdall, of Featherstone High School, Southall, and his assistants, Richard Cowley, who works in a secondary school in Birmingham, and Hayley Johnson of Acton High School.
