ALEX Dyer intends to enjoy his new-found tag as Wealdstone’s goal machine while he can.

The former Northampton Town midfielder’s strike in Saturday’s 1-1 in the FA Trophy with Corby Town took his tally to the season to eight – seven of which have come in the last five matches.

It is a tally to even outstrip Stones’ famed Fox in the Box Richard Jolly who has a more than respectable four in the same period.

Dyer admits he has never known a scoring streak like it, but revealed a tactical switch has left him determined to make the most of his purple patch.

“I’ve looked at my goal scoring,” he said. “At the start of the season I was playing a bit deeper and not getting the ball as much as I would like.

“So I spoke with the management and they wanted me to play higher up the pitch and get myself in the box, and I’m pretty confident at the minute that when I get chances I can stick them away.

“I’ve never had a goal-scoring spell anything like this. I’ve had like four in four, but nothing like this. I will take it while it is here because it is not going to last forever.”

Dyer was searching for a goal for the sixth game in a row in last night’s replay against the Steelmen, several of whom he played alongside in his days in league football with the Cobblers.

And he revealed, whatever the result, Stones fans have reason to thank one of Corby’s players in particular for making him the player he is today.

“Jason Crowe I know pretty well,” he said. “We played together in the first team at Northampton. He helped me out a lot because he was one of the senior players when I was just trying to break through. I look up to him in a way and we are still good friends.”

As for a goal tally for the season, Dyer revealed the original target was 10 by Christmas, a figure which early on in the season looked plenty big enough.

He added: “After 10 games I had none but, luckily, I’ve been on a good run and I might need to put it up now.”

Saturday’s visitors to The Vale Carshalton Athletic should consider themselves warned.
