AFC Wimbledon failed to record a third successive League Two victory as they were narrowly beaten by Bristol Rovers.

Having picked up six points in their last two games the Dons were full of confidence but faltered in the pouring rain at the Memorial Stadium.

Boss Terry Brown named an unchanged team from the one that saw off the challenge of Bradford at Kingsmeadow on Tuesday night.

But the visitors fell behind in the 11 th  minute when a lapse of concentration saw Rashid Yussuff lose possession on the halfway line.

Mustapha Carayol still had it all to do but the left-winger charged up the field and blasted past Seb Brown from the edge of the area.

It was one-way traffic as The Gas continued to press, nearly extending their lead when a stretching Carayol failed to reach Matt Gill’s wayward shot.

Jason Euell and Jack Midson were full of running at the top end of the pitch but Rovers keeper Scott Bevan remained untroubled in the first-half.

The Gas came within inches of doubling at the start of the second period when a clearance from Brown was almost diverted into the Dons net by Chris Zebroski.

Minutes later and it was Wimbledon on the attack, with George Moncur cutting inside on his right foot and forcing an excellent save from Bevan.

Christian Jolley replaced Euell as the hour-mark approached and the forward almost made an instant impact but he couldn’t quite reach Sammy Moore’s cross.

Dons were growing in confidence and Moore was next to try his luck, however the midfielder’s low shot was deflected behind by Rovers defender Cian Bolger.

Having already given his side one injection of pace with the addition of Jolley, Brown then threw on Kieran Djilali with just under 20 minutes to play.

But it was the home side who could have added to the score as Matt Harold was allowed time and space to swivel and shoot in the penalty area.

The lead remained at just a single goal and with Jolley and Djilali operating down the flanks Wimbledon would always pose a threat on the break.

But the visitors failed to get the speedy pair on the ball often enough in the closing stages and as the rain eased off in Bristol the home side clung onto all three points.
