ALAN Bennett has called on the Kingsmeadow crowd to suck the ball into the net in Saturday’s final-day showdown with Fleetwood.

The AFC Wimbledon defender believes the fans have a big part to play in the club’s fight for survival and has urged them to prove it this weekend.

More than 1,000 Wombles made the trip to Gillingham at the weekend and kept the faith despite watching their team head in 2-0 down at half-time.

They did not turn on the players and were repaid with a second-half performance to savour at Priestfield as the Dons grabbed a vital point.

Bennett reckons supporters at many other clubs would not have been so patient and sees the Kingsmeadow faithful as the 12th man this weekend.

He said: “Come down and get us over the line. Pull the ball in, suck it in, blow it over the line – do whatever you need to do.

“We had incredible support [at Gillingham] and at half-time we went in 2-0 down but there wasn’t even a hint of a boo or anything.

“It was incredible and they’re a privilege to play in front of. I’ve been at clubs where they’d have given up on us a long time ago.”

The Cod Army head into Saturday’s final game at Kingsmeadow with nothing left to play for, having suffered a 3-1 home loss to Chesterfield at the weekend.
