NEAL Ardley admitted his AFC Wimbledon side paid the price for camping in their own box after Aaron Downes' injury-time header denied them victory at Plainmoor.

Harry Pell's late goal looked like giving the visitors maximum points when his shot cannoned in off the Torquay defender on 87 minutes.

However, Downes made amends at the other end to power a head past Ross Worner from six yards to rescue a point for the hosts.

And Ardley admitted his troops dropped too deep trying to defend their lead.

He said: “The only thing we were guilty of trying to protect what we've got and ultimately then you don't stop it at source.

“The more they get the balls into areas where goals come from the more chance you have got of conceding.

“We were trying to get them up and get the shape back but people start to drop back to try and keep the lead. That's something we need to learn from.

“Overall I don't think we passed the ball as well as we have done during pre-season, but we were pretty solid defensively and created some nice stuff going forward.”
