THEY say you should never meet your heroes.

That statement rang true for AFC Wimbledon skipper Mat Mitchel-King as he came up against boyhood hero Edgar Davids on Easter Monday.

The former Barcelona, Juventus and Ajax star led his Barnet team to a smash-and-grab victory at Kingsmeadow to leapfrog the Dons in the battle for League Two survival.

The Dons captain reckons Davids' Bees were lucky to come away with three points as his side were punished for a momentary lapse at the back.

“Our game-plan was to get in their faces, not give them any breathing space, and we contained them and they found it tough to get out of their half. In the second-half, when they were battling the wind as well, I thought there only looked like being one winner really.

“It's so disappointing. The gaffer said the only way they'd score was from a mistake so we tried to make sure we didn't panic and weren't being rash. It's disappointing that the mistake has cost us the goal and the result.

“But we had chances with set-pieces where people haven't been in the right positions and their keeper made a great save late on. It was one of them afternoons where we huffed and puffed, felt comfortable, and then let ourselves down when they scored.”

Mitchel-King was tasked with marking the 'Pitbull' and made a good job of containing the veteran Dutchman until the Wimbledon resistance was broken five minutes from time.

“It's quite surreal playing against him,” Mitchel-King said of 40-year-old Davids.

“I grew up watching him as a kid and I used to like him and [Clarence] Seedorf because I was a midfielder myself. He was a bit of a hero of mine and it was weird seeing him and when I went into the ref's room at the start he was there.

“When you mark him in the game and see he's still a good calibre of player, still sharp for someone of his age, and he's doing well at Barnet. They're getting some results.”
