Harlesden's James DeGale was part of the England team that dominated the boxing competition in Melbourne.

They had nine competitors reaching the quarter-finals and only one then missing out on the semi-finals.

DeGale, who was born in Hammersmith, was unable to strike gold but grabbed a bronze medal after losing in the semi-final to eventual winner Jarrod Fletcher from Australia.

However, DeGale who won gold for England at the Commonwealth Youth Games two years earlier in Australia would go on to win the Olympic title in Beijing two years later.

Degale is now expected to fight IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch, who defeated Chunky's great rival and fellow west Londoner George Groves in May, later this year

 

The Commonwealth Games boxing team brought home eight medals in total from Melbourne including five gold.
