BOWLS: Janine Bancroft and Paul Cater came out on top in the ladies and men's finals competitions at West Ealing Bowls Club last weekend.

Bancroft, who only joined West Ealing BC earlier this year, showed her pedigree as a Welsh U25 international, winning the ladies' championship, the handicap, the 75-shots, and - together with Pam Hughes - the ladies' pairs competitions.

Cater, a seasoned West Ealing bowler and top Middlesex skip, won the men's championship, two-woods and men's pairs, partnered by Dick Cunningham.

Winners of the other club singles competitions were: Sue Butcher (open singles), Val van Baars (two woods). Robin Innes (three sets), Lu Green (three sets), Kevin Cochrane (men's handicap).

The ladies and men's triples competitions were won by Pam Hughes (skip), Margaret Hodgson and Pauline Mills, and by Robert Barrett (skip), Clive Simms and Tom Creaby.

The day ran slightly behind schedule on Saturday and the last six ends of the club's mixed pairs competition were completed in near darkness.

Eventually, Sue Butcher (skip) and Bob Wilsher emerged from the gloom as worthy Champions.

The finals of the men's Ealing & District Bowling Association will be held at West Ealing BC (Mervyn Road) on Sunday (10am).

Meanwhile, West Ealing completed their friendly fixtures for the season with a 110-40 win over Fassnidge (Uxbridge) BC last week.

A seventy shot win over just four rinks is remarkable and the club will see it as a reflection of their strength.

The highest winning rink was Paul Wilsher, Brenda Lines, Ken McCarthy and Rene Barber (skip) who overwhelmed their opponents 31-7.

Members of all Ealing Clubs and the local community, including non-bowlers, are warmly invited to attend and watch the climax of the local Ealing bowls season.

* Ealing Bowls Club had mixed fortunes in this weekends District Semi -finals held at Brentham BC on Sunday.

The triples of John Cowlin, Phil Campbell and Bryan Ogilvie lost out to Ealing Conservatives. However, John Cowlin reached the final of the singles tournament with a win over Peter Newman of Ealing Conservatives.

John Cowlin will now play Phil Sutcliffe of Brentham BC at West Ealing's Mervyn Road club in a repeat of the 2005 final which Cowlin won.
