KEEP performing at Hampton & Richmond Borough and you will get a chance with a Football League side again.

That was the message for Tom Hickey (pictured) from Beavers boss Paul Barry after the youngster returned from an unsuccessful trial with League One Brentford to sign on for Hampton again next season.

Barry is hoping Hickey will follow the example of fellow midfielder Joe Turner, who got the thumbs down following a trial with Leyton Orient last summer, but returned to have an excellent season with Hampton.

Barry said: “Tom spent a few weeks with Brentford and played a few games, and they said they will keep an eye on his progress, but we're delighted to have him back. He's an undoubted talent and was superb last season, and just like Joe, we have told him that if he keeps performing for Hampton he will get noticed again.”

Hickey was back in a Hampton shirt for Saturday's friendly at Bashley, as was striker Charlie Moone, who the Chronicle exclusively revealed would be re-signing from Borehamwood.

However, Barry does not expect to see fellow front man Mo Bettamer back as he has not been in touch since landing a trial at Dagenham & Redbridge three weeks ago.

Barry said: “Charlie scores goals, which is something we have missed in pre-season. The build-up play has been good, and we have been solid defensively, but you need someone to put the ball in the back of the net.

“We've not heard from Mo Bettamer for a few weeks, so we're planning for life without him. But with Charlie, Joel Ledgister and Jordan Rocastle, I am happy with that we have in that department.”

Former QPR defender Marcus Rose also made his debut against Bashley after signing up last week, while trialists George Hardy and Andrew Wright impressed at centre-back and left wing respectively.

Barry added: “George was with me at Camberley after two years with Aldershot, and has overcome an horrific leg break, while Marcus is big, quick and strong. Together with Alan Bray and Billy Jeffries, we have good options at centre-back.

“Powelly (joint manager) Darren Powell will be available when he is needed too, but with those four options, hopefully we will have enough.

“Andrew is one we want to keep included, and while he's not ready for the starting XI, it will benefit him for us to get him out on dual registration with a club in the league below instead of playing reserve team football.”
