GARY Alexander admits being offered a contract extension has given him a huge boost as he enters the twilight years of his career.

The 32-year-old striker was last week made an offer an a new deal by Brentford, and is mulling over the fine print at the moment.

However, although he admits it could be the last contact he signs as a footballer, Alexander, who has scored 18 goals in a season and a half at Brentford, won't be rushed into anything.

He said: “It's definitely a confidence booster to be offered a new deal, and for the manager to make it known I'm part of his future plans, especially at my age. I still feel I have a lot to offer.

“We are just talking at the moment, but at this stage of my career, I need to make sure it's the best offer I can get – it could be the last one I sign.”

Alexander also saluted the determination of a Brentford side who, despite putting in a poor show against Bournemouth on Boxing Day, kept plugging away until they got a last-minute equaliser.

He added: “We're obviously delighted to get a point because we did not perform, and it showed the spirit we have to come back like that. We let oursleves down with the performance, but still dug deep and put it right.”
