Brentford 2

BRENTFORD took advantage of two defensive blunders to deservedly win at Southampton this afternoon.

Richard Lee was called into action early on to make a smart point-blank range save from Guly Do Prado after Craig Woodman was caught in possession,

But Brentford took the lead on 15 minutes when an inconspicuous looking shot from Gary Alexander from the edge of the area somehow found its way past embarrassed Saints keeper Kelvin Davies.

Soon after, Davies saved well from a shot on the turn by Charlie MacDonald, while Lee made a smart diving save from a Ricky Lambert free-kick.

MacDonald made it 2-0 on 28 minutes, capitalising on yet another mistake in the Saints back four to nick the ball off a home defender to stab home, following a Woodman free-kick.

Lee made a good divi9ng save from Adam Lallana as the half drew to a close, but Brentford went in 2-0 up at the break.

Alex Chamberlain fired wide for Saints with the first decent chance of the second-half, before Alexander headed just over from a Sam Saunders corner.

With 25 minutes left, Lee saved a follow-up header from Dean Hammond after Kevin O'Connor had headed off the line from Do Prado.

Substitute Nicky Forster could have put the game to bed with six minutes left, but snatched at a loose pass from former Bee Ryan Dickson, but Lallana came close to pulling one back when he hit the upright with a free-kick on 90 minutes.
