MARCEL Eger is one of the best defenders around – and he didn't even know it!

The Brentford star has kept nine clean sheets in the 13 starts he has made this season – with Yeovil, Walsall, Wycombe, Oldham, Charlton, Scunthorpe, Sheffield Wednesday, Bournemouth and Basingstoke all unable to find a way past the German.

Only Hereford, MK Dons, Huddersfield and Carlisle have succeeded where they have failed, and found a way to beat the summer signing from St Pauli.

But one of his biggest tests to date will arrive at Griffin Park tomorrow in the shape of League One's top scorer, Charlton's 13-goal Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Eger said: “I was pleased that we had kept three clean sheets in a row, then somebody told me my personal stats the other day which I did not even realise – they are good stats.

“But the whole team has to take credit as they have ben playing well to keep the pressure off us, and if anyone does get through, we have an excellent keeper in Richard Lee behind us.

“Charlton will be a big challenge on Saturday, and with the likes of Wright-Phillips, we will have to keep our concentration for the whole 90 minutes.

“He has shown this season that he does not need many chances to score, so our challenge is not to give him many opportunities and keep him away from our goal.”

Only last month, Brentford put in one of their best performances of the season to knock Charlton out of the Johnstone's Paints Trophy 3-0 at The Valley.

And while not taking anything away from that performance, Eger knows it will be a very different game this time around.

He said: “It was a great performance against them in the JPT, but if anyone thinks just because of that game we will do it again, they are totally wrong. There will probably be a lot of changes to the Charlton team, but we are prepared for that.”
