MK Dons 2–0 Brentford
BRENTFORD'S promotion hopes were dealt a huge blow with a first ever defeat at Milton Keynes Dons this afternoon.
Jonathan Douglas should have opened the scoring on seven minutes when a deep cross from Clayton Donaldson found him unmarked at the back post, but his downward header was weak and the chance was gone.
Instead, it was the hosts who went in front on 14 minutes when former Bees loanee Dean Bowditch took a speculative pot shot from about 30 yards out which looked bread and butter for Simon Moore, but a rare error by the Brentford keeper saw the ball evade him and bounce in.
Harry Forrester, restored to the starting line-up, cut inside and tested home keeper Ian McLoughlin as Brentford looked for a reply, before forcing the Dons' number one into a flying save with a better effort soon after.
Marcello Trotta, another returning to the side, had a golden chance to equalise after a sublime one-two with Douglas put him in the clear on the left side of the area, but his finish did not match what came before it.
Bradley Wright-Phillips came on for Trotta at the break, and within 30 seconds of the restart should have equalised when Jake Bidwell's cross found him at the near post, but with the goal gaping, the Brentford striker headed wide.
Toumani Diagouraga, having only opened his account for the season three days earlier, was just over with an effort from the edge of the area, while at the other end, Moore went some way towards atoning for his earlier error with a brave save at the feet of Patrick Bamford.
Another chance came and went as Brentford broke in numbers, but Diagouraga's pass to Adam Forshaw went astray, while Harlee Dean's free header from a free-kick sailed over and Diagouraga shot wide as the Bees started to get desperate.
But it was all to no avail as the hosts, who had threatened little since taking the lead, killed the game off with five minutes left as skipper Stephen Gleeson this time gave Moore no chance with a superb finish from the edge of the area.
