CARETAKER boss Simon Bassey says he hopes to stay on as an assistant if he does not land the Dons job full-time.

Bassey oversaw his third game in temporary chage on Tuesday night at Oxford and expects to still be at the helm at the weekend, when AFC Wimbledon travel to Plymouth.

“I applied for the job because the club asked me to, but I worked under Terry Brown as an assistant and I've got no problems being an assistant,” Bassey told the Chronicle following a 3-2 defeat at the Kassam Stadium.

“I'm committed to this club as I have been for the previous 10 years. It's a club I have a great affection for. If they went elsewhere to appoint a manager, and he wanted me to work with them, I'd be delighted with that. If they want to give the job to me permanently, I'd be delighted with that. I

“'ll just go with it and see where it takes us.”

Bassey, who has endured two defeats since his first day win at Wycombe 10 days ago, added: “I haven't been told anything for the moment about where the club is in terms of making a decision, but it's not about me.

“I'll keep working for this football club and give it my best. If I get a second interview, then great, if not, then I'm big enough and ugly enough to take it on the chin. I'll give the same commitement that I've always given to this club.

“I think they interviewed some more people yesterday [Monday] and obviously the board will have their meeting and will notify people whether they've got a second interview.

“I think it'll probably be early next week that they'll announce a manger now, so I'm preparing for the weekend game as normal.

“I'll probably be in charge for Plymouth, unless I'm told otherwise, so I'll keep working hard and we have to address this run of results.”
