BARRATT Homes have pulled out of the deal with supporters’ trust Bees United to build a new stadium for Brentford FC at Lionel Road.

The plan, first announced seven years ago, was too see the club, in partnership with Barratts, build a new ground on disused railway land near the M4 flyover, funded by accompanying housing and community facilities.

The accompanying redevelopment of Griffin Park would also help alleviate the club’s debts, which are currently being covered by supporter-investor Matthew Benham.

However, the project was put on hold a year ago due to the economic downturn, and Barretts this week finally pulled the plug on their involvement.

Brentford now have an option to buy the site from Barratts, while Bees United, Brentford and Hounslow Council have all expressed a desire to either find a working solution at the site, or find a new one.

Before Lionel Road became Brentford’s preferred option for a new stadium, moves to both Feltham and Western International Market were mooted, while former chairman Ron Noades even threatened to move the club to Woking at one stage.
