A project inspired by disability athlete Kyle Powell is being set up in Hounslow to to help get other disabled youngsters in Hounslow into sport.

Powell's People is being put together by Hounslow's Sports Development Team following a grant of just over £3,000 from Balfour Beatty.

Its is just one part of the £45,000 being poured into youth sport projects in London by the London Youth Games sponsor's Sports Development Grant.

Powell, from Cranford, is already being tipped as a future British Paralympian, having taken part in

last summer's London 2012 Anniversary Games, where he clocked a personal best of 11.53 secs in the 100m sprint.

This followed his 100m and 200m title double at the National Junior Championships for Disabled Athletes the previous year, which he followed with another 100m title at the England Athletics Senior/U20 Combined Events Championship last year.

Rebecca Townsend, of Hounslow's Sports Development Team, said: “Inspired by Kyle, we would like to use this grant to develop disability sport and provide young disabled people in the borough with more opportunities to get involved in sport.

“Kyle was the sole competitor for Hounslow at the London Youth Games disability athletics in 2013, but this did not faze him and he won two gold medals in the Ambulant E 100m and 200m.

“In between races, Kyle spent most of the day chatting to other young disabled athletes and encouraging them to join their local athletics clubs. He was the winner of the 2013 London Youth Games Spirit of the Games award, and he further demonstrated why he was selected for this award by asking to work with us to get more young disabled people involved in sport.

“We would like to work closely with Kyle to achieve this by delivering inspirational assemblies in schools, as well as providing taster sessions, coaching for different sports and adaptive equipment specific to events in the London Youth Games.

“We would also like to continue building sustainable links with other clubs for young people with disabilities, like Feltham Bees and Feltham After School Club.”
