With QPR losing talismanic striker Charlie Austin last week, rumours have surfaced regarding who will take over goalscoring duty at Loftus Road.

Goalscoring - the Posh striker netted 64 times in 60 games for St Ives Town before making the move to Newport County.

The forward helped the south Wales club to promotion from the Blue Square Premier after a 25-year absence from the Football League.

The youngster has caught the eye more recently by bagging 13 goals in his last 15 games for Peterborough - including a hat-trick at mid-table Scunthorpe.

Washington's manager, Graham Westley, said this about the striker: "Conor is the best striker in this league - I don't think there is any doubt about that.

"Whatever a player tries to do against him, he always has an answer. He has pace to burn, a lot of strength and is showing increasing ability in front of goal.

"Plenty of top Championship clubs would line up to take Conor, but the question is when are the Premier League sides going to come along?"

The forward is coveted by many Championship teams and a bidding war was touted by many newspapers.

Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County were reportedly interested, but Reading had been holding talks with the Posh-man according to the Daily Mail.

The talks have apparently stalled, leading Hasselbaink's to swoop in for the forward in a bid to replace Austin, who left for Southampton last week.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony would not let his star-man leave if the deal was wrong but after turning down bids for the player, the R’s look to have got the deal done.

MacAnthony, initially adamant Washington was not going anywhere, previously wrote on Twitter: "On Monday Night turned down a multi multi million pound bid for C Washington from a recently relegated Premier league club. Fact.

"On Tuesday afternoon I turned down another multi million pound bid for Conor W from another ex prem club. Fact.

"And Yesterday morning I again turned another bid down for Conor from a large championship club. Fact. 3 bids/3 rejections on terms offered.

"Posh don't stand in players ways moving on to big things ever as long as everybody is happy that are factors in a deal. That is truth.

"I value our young squad, know their talent & they trust that when & if right deal comes along, I'll do right by them & our club. It's our policy."

However, reports last night that a deal had been struck with QPR were confirmed by Posh director of football Barry Fry.

The Hoops have agreed a fee in excess of £2.5million for the player.

He is expected to report to QPR’s training ground in Harlington for a medical this morning and personal terms have already been verbally agreed.

Peterborough chief Fry, told the Peterborough Telegraph: “The deal isn’t done until the paperwork is completed, but QPR are the only ones we are currently involved with regarding the sale of Conor.

“QPR have made an offer that’s acceptable to the club and the player wants to go which is perfectly understandable. We believe the deal is a good one for Posh and will be a good one for Conor.”
